HP Mini 2140 netbook review roundup

The HP Mini 2140 is the direct replacement for HP’s first entrant into the netbook market, the HP Mini-Note 2133. The 2140 fixes a lot of the problems that plagued the 2133 and keeps the bits that were successful. So you get a proper processor (Atom N270 1.6Ghz instead of the underpowered Via C7-M), a 10.1 inch display (over the 8.9 inch display of the 2133) and keep the fantastic keyboard and durable aluminium chassis.

HP Mini 2140 Good points:

1. Chassis – a durable aluminium body sets this netbook apart from its plastic rivals. All the reviewers liked the way it looked and how robust it makes the netbook.

Laptopmag points to its brushed silver aluminium lid and magnesium alloy chassis in its review. It even has metal alloy hinges with hardened steel pin axles so it designed to be opened and closed 25,000 times.

PC World listed the main features that make this netbook more durable, such as ‘its rugged frame and aluminium lid’ and the metal alloy hinges. Plus the spill resistant keyboard and the 3D DriveGuard that parks the hard drive in case you drop it. So this netbook is pretty decent for carrying around with you.

CNet believes that the aluminium chassis will stand up to the rigours of the road better than the other plastic netbooks but they reckon it is a bit heavier.

Computer Shopper were pleased that HP had kept the aluminium chassis from the HP 2133, as it looks and feels fantastic and also makes the 2140 lighter and impervious to scratches (notice the slight disagreement with CNet above). They also like the drive guard feature and feel that all netbooks should have this.

HardwareCentral takes 3 whole paragraphs to set the scene in its review of the HP 2140 before they tell us that HP is aiming the 2140 netbook at the mobile professional, which is why the chassis is aluminium rather than plastic in a ‘handsomely understated’ way. HardwareCentral expressed its pleasure at the drive guard accelerometer feature that parks the hard drive in the event of a suddent movement and tested it by bumping it a few times (but not dropping it).

LaptopLogic found the chassis to be durable and solid but thought that the aluminium casing added to the weight.

So overall then, the chassis is metal, which not only looks good but is also durable for the mobile professional or someone that wants to carry their netbook around a lot. Further features such as the splill resistant keyboard and the drive guard to park the hard drive in case you drop it (so you don’t get any potential data loss) are good things to have.

HP 2140 Mini-Note netbook

The HP Mini 2140 is an updated version of the HP 2133 Mini-Note that was underpowered but looked good and had a great keyboard a year or so ago.

Continuing with that trend, the HP Mini 2140 also looks great clad in aluminium and has been updated to include the now standard Intel Atom CPU, an accelerometer for the hard drive and an ExpressCard/54 slot.

With the large number of netbooks on the market it can be difficult trying to keep up or work out which netbook is the best overall. It used to be the MSI Wind U100 a while ago but there have been so many released it can’t still be number 1 can it?
