HP consistently make solid and well built netbooks, we compare the main features of their first, the HP 2133 Mini-Note with the latest, the HP 2140 Mini.

The HP 2133 Mini-Note was one of the first netbooks by one of the big laptop manufacturers and sold well with perhaps the best keyboard and very good screen.

The latest model, the HP 2140 brings the netbook specification up to date but how does it compare with its older sibling?

Announcing Fantastic Netbooks new netbook rankings – to sort out the best netbooks from the also rans.

With the large number of netbooks on the market it can be difficult trying to keep up or work out which netbook is the best overall. It used to be the MSI Wind U100 a while ago but there have been so many released it can’t still be number 1 can it?

But what about if you are looking for a particular feature and just want the best netbook in that category? We have started with 2 individual categories – the lightest netbook and the longest battery life. Perhaps you want a compromise, a light netbook with a long battery life, hopefully comparing the tables will give you a good idea of which netbooks to look at more closely.

So which is the lightest netbook and which one has the longest battery life but perhaps most importantly, which netbook is the overall number 1?

HP was one of the first major laptop manufacturers to respond to the Asus Eee PC’s budget price and Linux operating system. The HP 2133 Mini-Note was the result and, whilst it does not have the specification of many current netbooks, it is a popular choice, still available to buy and worthy of a place on this web site.

HP 2133 – Good Points:

1. Good looking – the Mini-Note has the look and feel of a more expensive device with a brushed aluminium lid and a sleek metallic design. This lightweight netbook has a good layout, a well designed keyboard, is sturdy and overall feels like a proper laptop.

3. Good keyboard – the HP 2133 Mini-Note’s keyboard is 92% of a full size keyboard, which is fantastic on an 8.9 inch netbook and is still one of the best keyboards on any netbook.

4. Screen resolution – even though the screen is 8.9 inches across, it runs at a resolution of 1280 x 800, which is better than most netbooks with a larger 10 inch screen.

5. Expandability – an Expresscard slot plus an SD card slot gives the HP 2133 pretty good expandability although you only get 2 USB ports whereas most netbooks offer 3.

HP 2133 – Bad Points:

1. Underpowered – the 1.2Ghz processor offers very poor performance and is one of the slowest netbooks overall. For instance, even video playback is jerky and only takes valuable battery life away.

2. Expensive – for what you get this netbook is expensive, there are better netbooks such as the Samsung NC10 or Asus Eee PC 1000HE with better specifications for less money.

3. Reflective screen – the Mini-Note’s screen has a glossy sheen, which is very reflective and makes the netbook very difficult to use outdoors.

4. Trackpad – the trackpad is small so lots of finger strokes are needed. The buttons are placed to the left and right of the trackpad instead of underneath, which takes a lot of time to get used to.

5. Battery – the 3 cell battery is only good enough for a little over 2 hours in normal use and even less is the Mini-Note is used heavily. Other netbooks have a much longer batter life with the Samsung NC10 at around 6 hours and the Asus Eee PC 1000HE even longer than that.

6. Fan – the fan runs constantly and can be quite noisy, which gets annoying after a while.

The HP 2133 Mini-Note has been around for a while now and is still available for sale in the UK. It has a great keyboard and a screen resolution of 1280 x 800 but perhaps does not have the overall specification of newer models. Still a popular choice for a 9 inch netbook.

I have put together a quick comparison of what I view as the top 5 netbooks on the market currently. This comparison includes the following models:

• HP 2133 Mini-Note
• Samsung NC10
• Advent 4213
• Asus EEE PC S101
• Acer Aspire One AOD150

Many of the main attributes of the current crop of netbooks are very similar, such as the amount of memory, the screen size or processor, as practically all the top netbooks use the Intel Atom N270 processor.

So how do you choose between which netbook to buy? Hopefully the comparison below will give you a good starting point.

Top 5 Netbook Comparison

A quick comparison of the top 5 netbooks on the market currently.

So if battery life is important to you then the Samsung NC10 and Acer Aspire One come out on top with an impressive 6 hours. Or if you wanted the lightest netbook that you could find then the Asus EEE is the lightest at only 1.1Kg (and still has a great 4.5 hours battery life).
