Announcing Fantastic Netbooks new netbook rankings – to sort out the best netbooks from the also rans.

With the large number of netbooks on the market it can be difficult trying to keep up or work out which netbook is the best overall. It used to be the MSI Wind U100 a while ago but there have been so many released it can’t still be number 1 can it?

But what about if you are looking for a particular feature and just want the best netbook in that category? We have started with 2 individual categories – the lightest netbook and the longest battery life. Perhaps you want a compromise, a light netbook with a long battery life, hopefully comparing the tables will give you a good idea of which netbooks to look at more closely.

So which is the lightest netbook and which one has the longest battery life but perhaps most importantly, which netbook is the overall number 1?

The Asus Eee PC S101 is an extremely stylish but more expensive netbook so does that mean that its specification is more advanced than its rivals?

As you can see from the comparison table above one of the big factors is battery life, with the 1000H having a fantastic battery life of 7 hours but the 1000HE beating that with up to 9 hours. The other main difference is the S101 model coming with a 16Gb SSD instead of a conventional 160Gb hard disk.

If price is a factor then the 1000H is great value installed the Linux operating system whilst the S101 is the most expensive but you do pay for the fantastic styling associated with that model.

It is a close call but my vote would go for the 1000HE as being the best overall. Which one would you buy?

The Asus Eee PC S101 is a departure from others produced by Asus and shows the company willing to target the corporate or executive market. This netbook presents fantastic looks and a stylish design but at a much higher price, over and above the usual netbook.

On the one hand you are still getting a bargain when comparing with a Sony Vaio or Toshiba ultraportable but the price puts the S101 into an area inhabited by better performing notebooks.

Asus Eee PC S101 – Good Points:

1. Great looks – the S101 is the best looking netbook on the market. The glossy lid in a ‘mocha’ brown colour and the brushed metal touches is clearly aimed at the executive or user that doesn’t mind paying for a bit of style. The slip case is also very well made and stylish, this netbook is often a talking point.

2. Trackpad – the trackpad is large, responsive and very easy to use.

3. Screen – is clear, sharp and accurate but not too glossy so you can use it outside and inside.

4. Build Quality – overall the build quality on the S101 is excellent and there are no complaints.

5. Weight – impressively, the S101 only weighs 1.06Kg and measures 264 x 182 x 25mm, which is smaller, lighter and thinner that most other netbooks.

6. SSD – the sold state drive has exceptional performance and is a lot quicker than pretty much any other netbook in terms of hard drive performance.

7. Online Storage – in addition to the 16Gb SSD and 16Gb SD card you also get 20Gb of online storage although it is only free for the first 18 months, you have to pay after that.

Asus S101 – Bad Points:

1. Specification – unfortunately the S101 is pretty much same specification underneath and is practically the same as the Eee PC 1000 although lighter but with reduced battery performance. There is not much to justify the increased price except the style.

2. Expensive – when compared with the specification of other netbooks you are essentially paying quite a lot more for those looks.

3. Storage – whilst it is an SSD with great performance you only get 16Gb (as well as a 16Gb SD card) but that does mean you have to watch out if you carry a lot of data around with you or want to install lots of software. It is nowhere near the capacity of usual 160Gb netbook hard disks.

4. Battery – the 4 cell lasts about 4.5 hours, which is on the low side when compared with the competition. It is not bad but less than the Eee PC 1000 so seems like a bit of step back in that regard.

5. Windows vs Linux – it may be worth looking at the Linux edition, as that includes a 64Gb SSD and 2Gb RAM. The Windows edition has a maximum 16Gb SSD due to the Microsoft licence.

Overall Score – 77.4% (average from 10 top netbook reviews)

I have put together a quick comparison of what I view as the top 5 netbooks on the market currently. This comparison includes the following models:

Many of the main attributes of the current crop of netbooks are very similar, such as the amount of memory, the screen size or processor, as practically all the top netbooks use the Intel Atom N270 processor.

So if battery life is important to you then the Samsung NC10 and Acer Aspire One come out on top with an impressive 6 hours. Or if you wanted the lightest netbook that you could find then the Asus EEE is the lightest at only 1.1Kg (and still has a great 4.5 hours battery life).
