Asus Eee PC 901 netbook

It might be a year or so old (a very long time in netbook-land) but the Asus Eee PC 901 is still one of the best netbooks around. The 901 incorporates many improvements over its predecssor, the 900 and as such has a good set of features gaining excellent reviews and verdicts from across the industry.

This gives the 901 a top 3 netbook ranking (see our netbook rankings) and an average score of 84.6% from the 9 reviews featured in this roundup.

The Eee PC 901 was originally offered for sale at £319.00 (£10 less than the 900 it replaced) and you can now pick one up at a very respectable £234.97 inclusive of VAT from Laptops Direct.

Asus 901 Good points:

1. Design – PC Pro liked the improved curves and glossy finish of the Eee PC 901 over the Eee PC 900. The hinge also felt more solid. CNet noticed that the 901 is 100g heavier than the 900 but at 1.1Kg it is still easy to carry around. Trusted Reviews found the 901 to be incredibly well made and is fantastic value, the screen felt strong and well put together and the screen hinge was secure and chunky. Laptopmag welcomed the design update to the 901, the glossy lid and the silver hinge gave it a sophisticated look. PC Advisor noticed that the finish was glossier and the corners were rounded but that was about it. TechRadar stated that the new chassis gave the 901 a much more professional feel than the 900 did even though it is very slightly larger and chunkier. Pocket Lint also noticed that the 901 has a slightly more chunky feel but is glossy and rounded although still feels robust.

Asus Eee PC 901 netbook

The good value Asus Eee PC comparison, this time between the Asus Eee PC 901, the Asus Eee PC 1000H and the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, all of which have fantastic battery life.

All of these Asus netbooks have a good specification including Draft N, 3 USB ports and practically all day use with the 901 featuring an SSD hard disk instead of the conventional hard disks in the 1000H and 1000HE netbooks.

The 901 is more portable, as it is lighter and slightly smaller but still manages to pack a lot in. It is also the cheapest of the 3 at only around £240. But then you don’t have to pay much more for the 1000H, which is available for just less than £260. The 1000HE is the real workhorse of the 3 will the longest battery life and a slightly faster processor but is also the most expensive.

Asus Eee PC 901 netbook

Here we have the Asus Eee PC 901 specification. The 901 may be getting on a bit and there are newer netbooks but the Eee PC 901 is a great netbook, as demonstrated in our netbook rankings.

The 901 gives you a good specification with a great battery life of up to 8 hours, Draft-N wireless and 3 USB ports that many newer netbooks do not have. The Eee PC 901 is a lightweight netbook weighing only 1.1Kg and has a good 8.9 inch screen.

Perhaps the only down side is the smaller hard disk capacity but it is a solid-state drive (SSD) so will generally operate much quicker than normal hard disks.

There are Linux and XP versions available, the Linux model comes with a 20Gb SSD whilst the XP version has a slightly smaller 12Gb SSD. Prices are just less than £240 for either version so you get a decent amount of netbook for your money.
