Announcing Fantastic Netbooks new netbook rankings – to sort out the best netbooks from the also rans.

With the large number of netbooks on the market it can be difficult trying to keep up or work out which netbook is the best overall. It used to be the MSI Wind U100 a while ago but there have been so many released it can’t still be number 1 can it?

But what about if you are looking for a particular feature and just want the best netbook in that category? We have started with 2 individual categories – the lightest netbook and the longest battery life. Perhaps you want a compromise, a light netbook with a long battery life, hopefully comparing the tables will give you a good idea of which netbooks to look at more closely.

So which is the lightest netbook and which one has the longest battery life but perhaps most importantly, which netbook is the overall number 1?

A comparison of the main features between the Acer Aspire One AOA150 and Acer Aspire One AOD150 netbooks.

So it not only boils down to screen size but also weight and battery life. The lighter AOA150 has the smaller screen size but only has a 3 cell battery, which lasts around 3 hours. The AOD150 has the larger screen size and also includes a 6 cell battery, which can go on for 6 hours but is the heavier of the two netbooks.

Acer brings the Aspire One in line with the rest of the netbook world with the new 10 inch AOD150. The Aspire One is probably the most popular netbook in the US, which is mostly due to its cost over there but in the UK it is not much different to other netbooks with similar specifications.

1. Screen – the Aspire One’s screen is the main selling point of the new model and looks great. It is crisp, is good to work with and really stands out. It is quite glossy and so may attract a bit of glare in certain lighting conditions.

2. Build quality – the AOD150 is well built and solid with one reviewer remarking that it is ready to be knocked about.

3. Battery – overall has a good life expectancy although most reviewers couldn’t decide how long the battery will last. Between 4 and 5 hours for intensive work is a realistic figure with some lighter use tests pushing the life expectancy up to around 6 hours, which is pretty good and compares well with most netbooks. The downside of this is that the battery is quite big, which makes the netbook a bit heavier and it sticks out at the back.

4. Audio – the audio is fairly good with plenty of volume and the sound is clear.

5. Performance – once the security software is removed (see bad points below) the performance of the AOD150 is a little better than the rest of the competition with most tasks being completed in a quicker time that the main rivals.

6. Style – generally a nice design, finished in a range of colours and has a nice glossy screen.

Now for the bad points:

1. Keyboard – the keyboad is not as big as it could be, as there is some available space to the left and right. This means the keyboard is cramped and is only 88% of full size making typing actually quite difficult for some people. When compared to its main competition, such as the Samsung NC10 with its keyboard at 93% of full size it is quite a difference. CNET, however, thought the keyboard was good, all other reviewers didn’t like it.

2. Trackpad – the trackpad on the AOD150 is one of its worst features. It has a really stiff rocker style button that you have to press really hard. The trackpad is also quite small although scrolling and browsing is generally fine.

3. Software – one reviewer mentioned the need to remove the preinstalled security software from the AOD150, as it significantly hampered the performance of the netbook.

4. Cost – it may be $50 to $100 cheaper in the US than its main rival but it is not so cheap over here in the UK. There are better netbooks to be had for the same money such as the Samsung NC10.

5. Bluetooth – the Aspire One does not come with bluetooth, which is practically unthinkable these days. All of the main competition have bluetooth so this is a frustrating omission.

The Acer Aspire One AOD150 is Acer’s attempt to get into the 10 inch netbook market and compete with the Samsung NC10, MSI Wind U100 and Asus Eee PC 1000HE amongst others. Although a fairly conventional specification the Acer Aspire One does offer decent value for money.

I have put together a quick comparison of what I view as the top 5 netbooks on the market currently. This comparison includes the following models:

• HP 2133 Mini-Note
• Samsung NC10
• Advent 4213
• Asus EEE PC S101
• Acer Aspire One AOD150

Many of the main attributes of the current crop of netbooks are very similar, such as the amount of memory, the screen size or processor, as practically all the top netbooks use the Intel Atom N270 processor.

So how do you choose between which netbook to buy? Hopefully the comparison below will give you a good starting point.

So if battery life is important to you then the Samsung NC10 and Acer Aspire One come out on top with an impressive 6 hours. Or if you wanted the lightest netbook that you could find then the Asus EEE is the lightest at only 1.1Kg (and still has a great 4.5 hours battery life).
