The Toshiba NB300 netbook has a great screen, keyboard and good battery life
The Toshiba NB300 netbook is the replacement for the popular NB200 model, which cemented Toshiba’s position in producing good quality netbooks with a decent battery life whilst offering value for money.
The NB300 is very similar to its big brother, the NB305, which has a chiclet style keyboard instead of the more traditional keyboard of the NB300. The NB305 will set you back around £40 more than the NB300-10M model and for that you get a bigger 250Gb hard drive, Windows 7 Starter instead of Windows XP and bluetooth.
But today we are concentrating on the NB300 and reviewers were appreciative of its great battery life (up to 7 hours of constant use), very good screen and comfortable keyboard. They also liked the large touchpad and the improved speakers of the NB200.
There were a few bad points in that there is no bluetooth, you can get the NB305 instead if you need it, and that the hard drive uses torx screws, which just makes accessing it a little more tricky than other netbooks. Another complaint is that there is only 1Gb RAM installed, which is still normal for netbooks of this price point and also easily upgradeable to 2Gb for around £35 to £40 (there is a link to Crucial at the foot of this post).
Other than the points discussed above, the specification is fairly standard and what you would expect from a netbook launched in 2010. You get the Intel Atom N450 processor, 1Gb RAM, a 160Gb hard drive, Windows XP and a 10.1 inch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution. The screen is glossy so if you don’t mind reflections when wanting to use the NB300 outside then this will be a good choice for you.
Overall, the Toshiba NB300 is a good choice and at only £270 or thereabouts represents good value for money.
